On the left, Mike Marshall’s photo of a Mountain Bluebird perched on a branch beside a pine trunk, in a slightly tilted white Polaroid-style print captioned Mountain Bluebird. From the print’s edge the photo breaks into a curving stream of colored pixel squares, light streaks and binary code that arcs across the dark teal background and gathers in a soft glow at an iPhone on the right showing the FeatherDex species grid, landing on the same bluebird’s badge. Centered between them, above the arc, are the FeatherQuest logo, a thin gold rule and the word FeatherDex in aqua italic

A Badge for Every Species

Your own photos, framed like a field-guide collection

Every species in your collection gets a round badge cut from one of your own photos and framed in the FeatherDex scalloped ring. Scroll your badges and you’ll see your birding life at a glance.

Each badge can show a date pill with your lifer date (First encounter) or your last-seen date (Last encounter), whichever you choose. Those dates belong to the species, not the photo. Set them yourself or import them from eBird. Add an older or newer photo and the date slides to match. Your photo metadata is never changed.

FeatherDex picks a badge photo for you, and the frame editor lets you make it yours: drag to position, pinch to zoom, and twist to rotate. Reflect the photo, choose where the date sits, or open precision controls to fine-tune. You can swap in a different photo anytime, and when a stronger photo of that species shows up later, FeatherDex can suggest it as a better badge. You decide.

Your Best Shots Rise to the Top

FeatherDex Quick Rating screen showing a Mountain Bluebird perched in a pine, with a gold FQ Rating pill reading 3.0. Below are My Rating star buttons from 1.0 to 5.0 in half-star steps, Undo and Clear Rating controls, a counter reading 6 of 9, and a filmstrip of the other bluebird photos
Quick Rating

Open a species and all your photos of it line up together. Quick Rating lets you move through them with one tap each, in half-star steps from 1 to 5, with Undo when your thumb gets ahead of you.

Alongside your own rating, every photo gets an FQ Rating, FeatherQuest’s photo score, worked out on your phone. Its job is to sort your best shots to the top. The exact number matters less than the order it puts your photos in, and beta testers will help shape it.

In a group photo, star the birds that should get the photo’s rating. Then sort or filter by either rating.

Tame the Burst

Bird photographers know the burst: twenty nearly identical frames of the same bird on the same branch. FeatherDex can stack similar photos taken close together, so your species page shows one tile with a count instead of twenty.

Make your own stacks too, choose the cover photo, and change how similar photos need to be or how far apart they can be in time. Stacking only changes what you see. Nothing is deleted.

Find Any Bird in Seconds

Search, filter, and sort the way birders think

Universal search looks across species, places, dates and ratings from one box. Start typing “mountai” and Mountain Bluebird and Mountain Chickadee are right there.

Filters go as deep as you like:

  • Subject: Bird, Nest, Egg, or Feather
  • Bird tags: age, sex, behavior, plumage, plumage variation, hybrid, domestic, and captive, matched to the same bird in the photo
  • Life list: Seen, Heard, Photographed, Heard Only, Seen but Not Photographed, and Photographed but Not Marked Seen
  • Missing species: add any species or family from search and see what you haven’t photographed yet
  • Ratings and dates: set a condition for FQ Rating, My Rating, or when you took the photo

Sort by common or scientific name, first encounter, date observed, date added, or either rating. Then switch between badges, a list, or photos.

Two overlapping FeatherDex screens. Behind, universal search with Mountai typed in the search bar, suggesting Mountain Bluebird, Mountain Chickadee, Blue-winged Mountain Tanager and Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, each labeled Species. In front, Collection filters: Subject chips for Bird, Nest, Egg and Feather, a Missing species switch, and Life-list achievement switches for Seen, Heard, Photographed, Heard Only, Seen but Not Photographed, and Photographed but Not Marked Seen

Seen, Heard, and Photographed

Three separate records for every species

FeatherDex tracks Seen and Heard separately for each species, alongside the photos you’ve taken. A heard-only owl at night and a perfect daylight photo are different moments, and your list keeps them that way.

Seen can come from your own photos, you can set or confirm it yourself, or it can come from an eBird import. Each species record keeps its own first and last encounter dates. You don’t need an eBird account to use FeatherDex.

Achievements sums up your birding life and your collection, year by year. Then try a filter like Seen but Not Photographed. It’s a ready-made list of photo goals for your next outing.

Remember Where You Saw It

Location, Even for Camera Photos

Each photo shows its date and a map pin, so you can see where you met each bird. Photos from a camera without GPS often have no location. FeatherDex can suggest one from photos you took the same day that do have a location, and you can confirm, change, or reject each suggestion.

You can also search for a place or drop a pin yourself. Location changes live in FeatherDex. Your original photos are never rewritten.

Birding Is Better Together

Some of the best birding days are shared ones: a morning out with photography friends, a family hike, a trip where someone else got the shot of the day. FeatherDex lets you keep those photos in your collection too, without counting them as your own.

Add a photo a friend took, then credit it to them as the photographer. Their photos stay in your library as moments you shared, and you can sort and organize by who took them. Only your own photos count toward your Seen and Photographed totals, so your life list stays honest. Turn on Count unspecified photos as mine, and any photo without a photographer counts as yours.

Not sure what a bird is yet? Mark it Unknown and come back to it later.

Made to Work Alongside Merlin and eBird

Different jobs, same love of birds

We love Merlin for identification, especially Sound ID. It’s still the first app we open in the field. eBird is where sightings become checklists, and checklists help science. FeatherDex isn’t trying to replace either one.

FeatherDex is for what comes after the outing: storing, organizing, and enjoying your own bird photos. Species pages include View in Merlin and View on eBird links, so you can read more about the bird, compare other photos, check its range, and keep sharpening your ID skills.
